ARTIST STATEMENT
Mixed Media - Using a combination of zinc plate etchings and monotype landscapes along with some elements of painting, I am interested in creating a collage of mixed media. I have an extensive printmaking history and I want to combine this experience in many styles of my work. As I refine this process, I hope to produce larger format works that combine landscape with detailed images of nature and color.
For my newest mixed media landscape work, I’m using a combination of zinc plate etchings, monotypes and hand painting. My goal was to create a nature collage with many interesting nuances… allowing you to feel as though you are looking at a distance landscape through a ‘window’ with finely detailed panels adding organic interest as you absorb the entire image.
Acrylic Paintings - I travel often & especially love spending time in Rockies. My recent paintings explore the majesty of the mountains & the splendor of the plains. My landscape work is heavily textured & typically very bright in palette. My large scale pieces can appear detailed & realistic yet loose & impressionistic at the same time. Layers upon layers of paint help me to achieve sunlight peeking thru the trees, a glimpse of nature enhanced for the viewer.
BIOGRAPHY
William began his art career as a Fine Art printmaker in the early 1980’s after studying printmaking and painting at the Kansas City Art Institute.
His incredible attention to detail and relentless search for perfection can easily be seen in his beautiful hand-colored etchings. These extraordinary works have been exhibited and collected throughout the world, particularly during the ‘fine art’ print heyday of the 80’s.
With the 90’s decade and a new desire to ‘paint’ William pursued an unexplored interest in the study of landscape. He spent a great deal of time painting throughout the Midwest. The stimulating atmosphere at the Chicago Art Institute inspired him while living and working in the area. He spent hours at the museum studying their magnificent collection of Impressionist masters. William found the art of Claude Monet most intriguing. He was fascinated by the ‘presence’ of the paint on the canvas and how Monet used the gesture of color to communicate a moment in time.
The emphasis toward his landscapes and current representational work is not in the exact detail of reality but rather in the use of paint to make an impression of a place and time.
William currently resides in Denver, Colorado and his work is in numerous private and corporate collections throughout the Country.
