ARTIST STATEMENT
In my art, I focus on clean, modern environments with hints of nature represented by maps collected over the years. The circle, which is one of the most common elements found in nature, is a primary focus in my painting. I am drawn to the simplicity of form and continuity in shape of the sphere.
My newest series takes the concept of the map and explores it in a micro state, as well as studies the formation of a grid representing urban settings and man-made paths.
I’ve always maintained a connection to fine art, yet set about my early career as a graphic designer. This early training allowed for practice with composition, color, type and perhaps most importantly how people interact and relate to various forms of content.
As I began to segue from design to painting, I began to remove subject matter from my paintings and repeated one shape, the circle, to create compositions. This allowed me to practice a non-judgmental, play-like approach to painting. It was important at the time to loosen up and see what would result by confidently laying down shapes while reacting to my previous choices. Introducing maps into the work began to reference a landscape and spoke to exploration, wanderlust or simply being content with where you are, aspects integral to my life.
As I continue my practice I am learning that I see the world in patterns and shapes—and prefer to be in motion. My method of working is very spontaneous.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, Stacey Schultz moved to Denver, Colorado in 2003 after spending a decade in northern California (San Francisco/Lake Tahoe). In Denver, she began to study painting at the Art Students League of Denver, continuing her lifelong passion for fine arts.
Schultz’s work as an artist is greatly influenced by her practice of design; she worked as a graphic designer and creative director for over 15 years. Her work is also deeply inspired by her physical environment and motion; a result of a competitive skiing background and travel. She has been included in group and solo exhibitions and has received numerous commissions for her art. Her work is contained in the collections of the National Renewable Energy Labs (NREL), Beck Group, Sybase, Kaiser, and many other corporate firms as well as residential collections.
